The Manhattan Sentinels (1993-1996) is a site-specific commissioned sculpture by Beverly Pepper, located in Federal Plaza, downtown Manhattan, New York City. Commissioned by the US General Services Administration’s Art in Architecture Program, the cast iron sculpture, consisting of four “totems” rising up to 39 feet tall, was installed in 1996.

In 2020, Volmar Construction, Inc. was contracted to lead the assessment of the Manhattan Sentinels. Their expertise was crucial in capturing and documenting the orientations of each sculptural element accurately. Utilizing a drone-mounted 3D scanner, Volmar Construction created a detailed point cloud, which was then used to generate AutoCAD drawings. These drawings established reference points essential for the sculpture’s reinstallation. The team also conducted a thorough on-site evaluation of the sculptures’ pre-removal condition, supported by high-resolution orthophotos from the drone. Volmar Construction’s meticulous approach ensured the safe removal and storage of the sculptures.

In 2023, Volmar Construction in collaboration with EverGreene conservators, performed cleaning treatments on the Manhattan Sentinels. The cleaning aimed to remove surface corrosion, rust scaling, and apply a protective anti-corrosion inhibitor. Volmar Construction’s skilled supervision during the reinstallation process ensured the sculptures were reinstalled with precision and care.

Volmar Construction’s dedication and collaboration with all involved parties were instrumental in the successful restoration and reinstallation of the Manhattan Sentinels, preserving this iconic piece of public art for future generations.
